Welcome to the official getting started guide for your Ledger hardware wallet. Master the art of self-custody with the world's most trusted security solution for digital assets. Follow our step-by-step instructions to initialize your device and install Ledger Live.
The gold standard in crypto security and self-custody.
In the rapidly evolving world of cryptocurrency, security is paramount. Ledger provides a hardware wallet solution that keeps your private keys offline, away from potential online threats like hackers and malware. Unlike software wallets (hot wallets) that are constantly connected to the internet, a Ledger device acts as a cold storage vault for your digital assets.
By using a Ledger hardware wallet, you gain full ownership and control over your funds. The device requires physical confirmation for every transaction, ensuring that no funds can move without your explicit consent. Whether you are a seasoned investor or just starting your crypto journey, Ledger offers the peace of mind that your assets are secure.
Keys never leave the device.
Manage 5,500+ coins via Ledger Live.

Connect to dApps securely.
Follow these steps to initialize your device safely.
Ensure the box was sealed and contains the device, a USB cable, and recovery sheets. Check that the device has not been tampered with. If the recovery sheets are already filled out, do not use the device and contact support immediately.
Download the official Ledger Live application from ledger.com/ledger-live. This software is the companion app for your device, allowing you to manage accounts and update firmware.
Connect your Ledger to your computer using the USB cable. Follow the on-screen instructions on the device to navigate. Select "Set up as new device" if this is your first time.
Choose a PIN code between 4 to 8 digits. This code unlocks your device. Avoid simple sequences like 1234 or 0000. You will need this PIN every time you plug in your Ledger.
Your device will display a 24-word recovery phrase. Write these words down exactly as they appear on the provided recovery sheets.
This phrase is the only way to restore your funds if your device is lost, stolen, or broken. Never store it digitally (no photos, no cloud storage). Keep it in a secure, physical location.
Open Ledger Live and navigate to the "My Ledger" tab. Allow the manager on your device. Install apps for the cryptocurrencies you wish to hold (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum). Check for a firmware update banner at the top of the page and update if available to ensure optimal security.
Ledger Live is the all-in-one companion app for your Ledger device. It allows you to buy, sell, swap, and grow your crypto securely.
Your recovery phrase is the master key to your assets. Protect it at all costs.
Your 24-word recovery phrase is generated on the device itself. It never touches the internet. Anyone with these words can access your funds.
Ledger support will never ask for your recovery phrase. Never enter it into any website, app, or computer. Only enter it on the Ledger device itself.
Regularly connect your device to Ledger Live to check for firmware updates. These updates patch vulnerabilities and add new features.
Try a different USB cable or port. Ensure you are not using a "charge-only" cable. Restart Ledger Live.
Disconnect the device and restart Ledger Live in administrator mode. Reconnect the device while holding the left button to enter Bootloader mode if necessary.
Ensure your device is unlocked with your PIN and you have opened the specific app (e.g., Bitcoin app) for the account you are trying to access.
